CNI (Common Network Initiative)

CNI Phase II – User Migration – What to expect

Phase II of the CNI project involves moving users from our Cisco network to the new Alcatel-Lucent network.

  • An initial brief service outage will be experienced as the individual workstation, wireless access point, printer, server, etc. connections are cut-over to the new network distribution switches within the building.
  • A second 10 to 30 minute outage will take place at a later date when the building's new distribution equipment is cut-over to the new network router backbone.

The length of network outage will depend upon the equipment/wiring in each building’s telecommunication room and the type of cut over (Parallel or Hot Cut).

Parallel Cut-over

  • An initial 3 to 5 minute network service outage will be experienced as connections to individual workstations, wireless access points, printers, servers, etc. are moved from one port on the current distribution switches to another port on the new network equipment. Both old and new distribution equipment operate on somewhat parallel networks within the same Telecommunications room or space.
  • A second 10 to 30 minute outage will take place at a later date when the building's new distribution equipment is cut-over to the new network router backbone.

Hot Cut-over

  • In about 30% of the Telecommunications equipment spaces on campus, physical space limitations, power, or fiber optic resources prevent both current and new distribution equipment from operating in parallel with one another. A more lengthy service outage is required in order to remove all users from the old equipment at the same time, replace that equipment with new, and then reconnect the users.
  • "Hot" Cut-Overs require service outage durations of one to two hours per piece of equipment.
  • A second 10 to 30 minute outage will take place at a later date when the building's new distribution equipment is cut-over to the new network router backbone.

Wireless Outage
Wireless outages will take a little longer than wired connections, as each wireless transmitter has to be reset after the network migration.

  • The wireless outages will average less than 15 minutes. It is necessary that the wireless outages occur the same days that the wired outages occur in each building.

Schedule
The CNI Phase II – User Migration Schedule will be updated as needed, and will have the most accurate information about the network migration schedule.

Signage/Notifications

  • ITS will post signs at the main doors of buildings the day migrations are scheduled.
  • Your College’s/Department’s technical support staff will be notified prior to work in your building.  They can assist you with questions or if you need special accommodations.

The CNI network project is part of ongoing efforts to improve the speed, reliability and security of the network and we apology for any inconveniences caused by the network outages during the upgrade.

Thank you, The CNI team
